WD, It sounds like your Rebel problem is a doosy. Assuming the engine mechanical is good (valve timing, compression), and your efforts with the fuel system, I'd look in another direction: Either the engine isn't breathing enough (ie, exhaust restriction) or the ignition system is the problem - specifically, whatever controls the spark advance. Most probably it's controlled electronically, but I'm not sure. That's where I'd be directing my efforts. ==PLEASE== do not cut the bike in half. Worst case, I'll buy it from you for parts.
R, you asked about the Rebel 450's performance vs. the Rebel 250. Night and day is the answer. The 450 is -quite- peppy, cruises 75+ easily, where the Rebel was screaming at 70. No more after-ride vibration tingles for my wife. She's happy, and when she's happy, I'm happy.
There may still be a Savage in our future, who knows? But, now there's no pressure to buy right away, and with that luxury, time and money are on our side.
